Lipoma removal - warning graphic scar pic

After discovering a lump on my back the other day I visited my doctor today (17th Feb).  She diagnosed a non-serious lipoma.

It will be removed once I receive an appointment from a surgeon in St. Vincent's.
He will examine me and then schedule the surgery which should be done as a day patient.

Update to follow:

A week later I visited the consultant in St. Vincent's Private Hospital.  He confirmed it was a lipoma and scheduled a removal of it for the following week.

The removal was done under local anesthetic and took about an hour or so. The surgeon said it was quite "haemostatic" so he needed to do a fair bit of cauterizing.

I got to look at the removed growth which was quite the horror show in a jar!

Although lipomas are benign fatty (eeek!) growths the doc will still biopsy it and the results will be sent to my GP.

Here is the site of the removal a day after the procedure.

I went back to work the next day but didn't move my arm too much.  I even found it painful to hold my handbag in my right arm!!

For pain I took Neurofen & Solpadeine..

I'll post a further picture of the scar in a few days.

Edit: 5 days after procedure

Edit No 2 - about 3 weeks after the removal

  3. Glad it went well. My grandfather had a bunch of these on his arms, but he never had them removed.

  4. I hope you continue to heal well! I had a small one of these on my lower back and got it removed about 2 months ago. Luckily mine was minor enough that my doctor did it right in the office with just some local anesthetic.

    1. I got a shock when I saw it originally but I was glad to discover that although unsightly it was nothing to worry about!
